Area of Refuge

Area of Refuge

The requirements for areas of refuge are determined on a state by state basis. This is a space designed for people who may be unable to evacuate a structure on their own accord should an emergency take place. These are safe spaces where they can call for help and then wait for rescue personnel to assist with the evacuation process. If you have a public building new construction that is more than one level, you are required to have an Area of Refuge installed on all levels above or below the ground level.

Requirements – Equipment and Emergency Communication Areas

–    Include visual and audible signals noting help has been contacted

–    Allow for two-way communication whenever a call is placed

–    Must have locations on ever floor below and above ground level

–    Each area has to be marked clearly

–    Areas of Refuge must have a central location within the building or connect to an outside line
